Medicare Supported Sessions
What are they?
You can receive up to 10 individual counselling sessions with a psychologist each calendar year, subsidised by Medicare.
You’ll still be out of pocket, but your out-of-pocket costs contribute to the Medicare Safety Net each year.
Are you eligible?
Medicare rebates are provided under the Australian Government’s Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative which covers clinically diagnosable disorders that significantly impact your emotions, thoughts, social skills and decision-making. The initiative covers mental health issues such as:
- anxiety;
- depression;
- panic disorder;
- post-traumatic stress disorder;
- adjustment disorder;
- sleep problems; and
- bereavement disorders.
If you would like to know more, click on the Australian Psychological Society’s ‘Medicare Rebate FAQs’ or the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing ‘Better Access to Mental Health Care Fact Sheet for Patients’.
Do you need a referral?
Only if you want to access the Medicare rebate. You’ll need a referral from your general practitioner or psychiatrist. Your GP assesses your eligibility by completing a detailed mental health assessment and preparing a Mental Health Treatment Plan for you. Please ask your GP for a longer session to allow time for this.
Your referring doctor will review your progress after the first six sessions and assess your eligibility for further sessions.
Can you have more than 10 sessions?
Yes. Many people find that 10 sessions are enough. However, others find that they need more. You can have as many as you need with us and you don’t need a referral.
When another year starts and if the need is still there, you can continue the Medicare Supported Sessions with a new referral from your GP.
How to get started.
It’s easy. Contact us to make an appointment or for more information. And remember to bring your referral to the first session.
